How to Calculate Regional Pricing

The mathematical foundation of fair PPP pricing. Learn to calculate regional prices that are both fair and profitable.

What is PPP (Purchasing Power Parity)?

PPP is an economic measure that shows how much goods and services cost in different countries relative to the US.

Example:

  • 🇺🇸 USA PPP = 1.00 (baseline)
  • 🇧🇷 Brazil PPP = 0.62 (60% of US cost of living)
  • 🇮🇳 India PPP = 0.28 (28% of US cost of living)

If a developer earns $60K/year in USA, a similar developer in India earning local PPP-adjusted rates earns ~$17K equivalent.

The PPP Pricing Formula

Regional Price = Base Price × Country PPP Index

Where:

  • Base Price = Your US/baseline price (e.g., $99)
  • Country PPP Index = World Bank PPP for that country (0-1.5+)

Step-by-Step Example

1

Define your base price

Your US/EU SaaS price: $99/month

2

Look up PPP index

World Bank data: Brazil = 0.62, India = 0.28

3

Apply formula

$99 × 0.62 = $61.38 (Brazil). $99 × 0.28 = $27.72 (India)

4

Round to local currency

Brazil: R$ 310 (at ~5 BRL/USD). India: ₹ 2,200 (at ~80 INR/USD)

5

Verify affordability

Check: Does ₹ 2,200/month feel fair for an Indian developer? Yes.

Common Mistakes in PPP Calculation

Using outdated PPP indices (older than 6 months)

Use World Bank (worldbank.org) or IMF data updated quarterly.

Applying PPP to get too-low prices

If India price is <2% of US price, you're too aggressive. Target 20-40% range.

Forgetting local currency fluctuations

Recalculate monthly (or use PriceParity to automate this).

Not accounting for purchasing power in services

PPP is cost-of-living adjusted; it IS the right metric for SaaS.

Quick PPP Calculator

Use this quick reference for common countries (World Bank PPP, 2024):
